Celebrant Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a celebrant?
A celebrant is a professional who creates and conducts personalised ceremonies for weddings, vow renewals, baby namings, and other life events. I specialise in wedding ceremony design and delivery.
-
What does a celebrant do?
A celebrant creates and leads a personalised ceremony that reflects your story, values and wishes. They’ll take time to get to know you, help shape the ceremony, write a meaningful script and guide everyone through the occasion, whether it’s a wedding, vow renewal, naming ceremony or celebration of life.
-
What is an independent celebrant?
An independent celebrant creates and leads a ceremony shaped entirely around you, without being tied to a particular religion, belief system or organisation. Unlike a humanist celebrant, whose ceremonies follow a non-religious humanist approach, an independent celebrant can include religious, spiritual, cultural or non-religious elements, or a thoughtful blend of them. I am an independent celebrant!
-
What is a humanist celebrant?
A humanist celebrant creates and leads non-religious ceremonies based on humanist values, with a focus on people, relationships and lived experience rather than religious belief. Unlike an independent celebrant, they won’t include acts of worship or religious rituals, although cultural traditions or readings with personal meaning may be welcomed.

Who can marry you in the UK?
It depends on where in the UK your wedding takes place. In England and Wales, a legal marriage must involve a registrar or an authorised religious person. In Scotland, it may be conducted by a registrar or an authorised religious or belief celebrant, including an authorised humanist celebrant. Northern Ireland also permits registrars and approved religious or belief officiants.
An independent celebrant can create and lead your personalised ceremony, but you’ll need to complete the legal marriage formalities separately. Always check with your local register office, as the rules vary across the UK. Here’s a blog post on the difference between celebrants and registrars, if you want to read some more.
-
What’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?
A registrar conducts legal civil ceremonies, following a set script, while a celebrant creates a completely personalised ceremony with no restrictions on content, location, or format.

Can a celebrant-led wedding legal?
Currently, celebrant-led weddings are not legally binding in England and Wales. Most couples complete the legal registration separately at a registry office before or after their celebrant-led ceremony. This can be done cheaply and easily at your local registry office (approximately £60).
(Humanist-led weddings are currently legal in Scotland and Northern Ireland)
(As of July 2026, there is legal reform under consultation which may result in a change to how marriages are legalised. You can read more on GOV.UK.) -
How much does a celebrant cost in the UK?
Celebrant fees vary depending on experience, location, and the level of personalisation. Prices range from £450 to £5000 for a bespoke wedding ceremony.
I currently offer a full celebrancy package called The Ceremony, which costs from £1200, and a consultation design package called Shape Your Ceremony for £365.
-
How long does a celebrant-led ceremony last?
Most ceremonies last 20 to 45 minutes, depending on what you choose to include. Every ceremony is unique and tailored to your preferences.
-
Where can we have a celebrant-led wedding?
Anywhere! Unlike registrars, celebrants are not limited to licensed venues, meaning you can have your ceremony outdoors, at home, in a woodland, on a beach, or any location that’s special to you!
-
Can we include religious or spiritual elements in our ceremony?
Yes! An independent celebrant-led ceremony can be as traditional or modern as you like, incorporating religious readings, blessings, symbolic rituals (like handfasting), and personal vows. {Note that if you work with a humanist celebrant, there will not be space for religious or spiritual elements}
-
Can we have a completely unique ceremony?
Of course! Every ceremony I create is completely original; no templates, no rules, and no limitations. Whether you're after something classic, a little offbeat, or even themed, I’ll design a ceremony that reflects you perfectly, written from scratch and inspired by your relationship and community.
-
Can we write our own vows?
Absolutely! Personal vows add a beautiful, meaningful touch to your ceremony. If you'd like a little support, I’m here to help, whether that’s guiding you through the writing process or giving you a gentle push if you’re feeling stuck. I also designed a short course to help you write your vows from start to finish, working at your own pace in private.
Many couples I work with choose to keep their vows a surprise until the big day (with a bit of help from me behind the scenes!). And if writing isn’t your thing, no worries; here’s a blog post about AI assistance with vows and why it isn’t the ‘no-no’ many people think it is! -
What does “no lawful impediment” mean?
A lawful impediment is a legal reason why two people cannot marry or enter into a civil partnership; for example, if either person is already married or in a civil partnership, is under the legal age, or is too closely related to the other person. In a registrar’s wedding, you may hear this phrase when guests are asked to declare any valid legal objection.
-
What is “giving notice”?
Giving notice is the formal legal process of declaring your intention to marry or form a civil partnership. You’ll usually attend an appointment at your local register office, provide the required documents and confirm details about your ceremony. Notice must be given before the legal ceremony and within the required timeframe, so check the current rules with your registry office.
-
Do you do elopements?
Absolutely. What a beautiful honour and joy to be a part of that space with you both!
-
Do you do rehearsals?
Yes, if you'd like one! Some couples enjoy having a full rehearsal, while others are happy to go with the flow on the day. By the time your wedding arrives, you'll be familiar with your ceremony script, so most couples choose to skip a full run-through and simply practice the entrance. Whatever you decide, I’ll guide you every step of the way so you feel calm, confident, and ready.
-
How far in advance should we book you?
The sooner, the better. Busy dates get snapped up! I commit to only one ceremony a day, and take bookings on a first-come, first-served basis. However, life happens so feel free to reach out at short notice…you just never know!
-
How do we book you?
Easy peasy! Just fill out the enquiry form and we’ll start with a chat over a cuppa. If we’ve got chemistry, we’ll stick your date in the diary and get started with the ceremony of your dreams!
